Jayson Tatum goes over 40 again to lead Boston Celtics to victory over Golden State Warriors

The Boston Celtics just keep on winning, this time picking up another thrilling victory over the Golden State Warriors by a score of 119-114. It was a back and forth affair that featured a point scoring duel between Steph Curry and Jayson Tatum, with the Celtics ultimately prevailing in the end. While Curry continued his insane recent play with 47 points, it wasn’t enough to pick up a victory over Boston. With the C’s missing both Jaylen Brown and Rob Williams on the night, they absolutely need Tatum to show up tonight, and he did, dropping 44 points in the process. Kemba Walker also had one of his best games in recent memory, dropping 26 points of his own, including a dagger three pointer late in the fourth that essentially sealed the deal.

The Warriors blasted past the Celtics out of the gate tonight, and quickly built up a 14 point lead early on the first quarter. They allowed way too many easy cuts to the rim, and the Warriors took full advantage. When the defense attempted to combat that issues by shrinking into the paint more, the Warriors changed pace and started knocking down threes. Boston would be staring at a double digit deficit for most of the second quarter, before going on a late 10-0 run to close out the quarter, with the score set at 66-60.

The Celtics kept up the momentum heading into the third quarter, and opened up the frame with an 18-5 run. Kemba Walker chipped in with three 3-pointers to help the run, and it looked like the tide had completed shifted in Boston’s favor. Unfortunately, Steph Curry had other plans, and completely took over the game for the Warriors. He scored 16 points in the frame, as the Celtics had no answers for his three point shooting prowess. When all was said and done, the score was knotted up at 89, setting the stage for the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was very back and forth, with six lead changes taking place in the final frame. Things seemed increasingly dire when Curry nailed yet another three with four minutes left, pushing Golden State’s lead to six. From that point on however, Boston would go on a 16-5 run to close out the game, and seal the victory. Marcus Smart would hit the go ahead three after faking out his defender with a brilliant fake pass, and Kemba Walker hit a dagger three over Andrew Wiggins that effectively ended the game.

The Celtics continue to pull off win after win, and now find themselves in the midst of a solid six game win streak. It’s the run Celtics fans had been expecting the team to make the entire season, and the team has finally delivered. Tonight’s win may be arguably the most impressive of the bunch, as they overcame some key absences, and another insane performance from Curry, to pull out a victory. It’s an extremely encouraging victory considering the circumstances, as Boston now has sole possession of the four seed in the Eastern Conference for the time being.

While Tatum will rightfully get all the praise, there were some key under the radar performer’s repping the black and green tonight too. Kemba Walker had a huge game, and hit arguably the biggest shot of the game. Marcus Smart was at his usual best on both ends of the floor with the game on the line. Payton Pritchard was a key part of keeping the Celtics in the game in the second quarter, and showed off his range with a 31 foot three pointer in this one. Recent signing Jabari Parker showed some of his offensive potential, as he chipped in 11 points in his Celtics debut. Combine that with the other pieces the Celtics were missing tonight, and this team suddenly looks very dangerous again.

The Celtics will now try push their win streak to seven with an upcoming matchup against the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls made some big moves at the trade deadline, but haven’t really been able to make much of a playoff push as a result. With Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic leading the charge, this team still poses a serious threat offensively, but the Celtics should still be able to punch some holes in their weak defense. Hopefully the team can get some of their injured players back, and pick up another win over the Bulls.
